Spoken Multimodal Human-Computer Dialogue in Mobile Environments (Text, Speech and Language Technology)

The ongoing migration of computing and information access from stationary environments to mobile computing devices for eventual use in mobile environments, such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), tablet PCs, next generation mobile phones, and in-car driver assistance systems, poses critical challenges for natural human-computer interaction. Programming books Spoken Multimodal Human-Computer Dialogue in Mobile Environments pdf. Spoken dialogue is a key factor in ensuring natural and user-friendly interaction with such devices which are meant not only for computer specialists, but also for everyday users. Speech supports hands-free and eyes-free operation, and becomes a key alternative interaction mode in mobile environments, e.g. in cars where driver distraction by manually operated devices may be a significant problem. Parsing technologies are concerned with the automatic decomposition of complex structures into their constituent parts, with structures in formal or natural languages as their main, but certainly not their only, domain of application. The focus of Recent Advances in Parsing Technology is on parsing technologies for linguistic structures, but it also contains chapters concerned with parsing two or more dimensional languages. New and improved parsing technologies are important not only for achievi

On the other hand, the use of mobile devices in public places, may make the possibility of using alternative modalities possibly in combination with speech, such as graphics output and gesture input, preferable due to e.g. privacy issues. Researchers’ interest is progressively turning to the integration of speech with other modalities such as gesture input and graphics output, partly to accommodate more efficient interaction and partly to accommodate different user preferences. This book: combines overview chapters of key areas in spoken multimodal dialogue (systems and components, architectures, and evaluation) with chapters focussed on particular applications or problems in the field. focusses on the influence of the environment when building and evaluating an application. Audience: Computer scientists, engineers, and others who work in the area of spoken multimodal dialogue systems in academia and in the industry. Graduate students and Ph.D. students specialising in spoken multimodal dialogue systems in general, or focusing on issues in these systems in mobile environments in particular Download free Spoken Multimodal Human-Computer Dialogue in Mobile Environments (Text, Speech and Language Technology) pdf

Affect and Emotion in Human-Computer Interaction: From Theory to Applications (Lecture Notes in Computer Science / Information Systems and Applications, incl. Internet/Web, and HCI)

Affect and emotion play an important role in our everyday lives: They are present whatever we do, wherever we are, and wherever we go, without us being aware of them for much of the time. Programming books Affect and Emotion in Human-Computer Interaction pdf. When it comes to interaction, be it with humans, technology, or humans via technology, we suddenly become more aware of emotion, either by seeing the other’s emotional expression, or by not getting an emotional response while anticipating one. Given this, it seems only sensible to explore affect and emotion in human-computer interaction, to investigate the underlying principles, to study the role they play, to develop methods to quantify them, and to finally build applications that make use of them. This is the research field for which, over ten years ago, Rosalind Picard coined the phrase "affective computing". The present book provides an account of the latest work on a variety of aspects related to affect and emotion in human-technology interaction. The first step for any intelligent HCI system is face detection, and one of most friendly HCI systems is hand gesture. Face Detection and Gesture Recognition for Human-Computer Interaction introduces the frontiers of vision-based interfaces for intelligent human computer interaction with focus on two main issues: face detection and gesture recognition. The first part of the book reviews and discusses existing face detection methods, followed by a discussion on future research. Performance evaluation issues on the face detection methods are also addressed. The second part discusses an interesting hand gesture recognition method based on a generic motion segmentation algorithm. The system has been tested with gestures from American Sign Language with promising results. We conclude this book with comments on future work in face detection and hand gesture recognition. Face Detection and Gesture Recognition for Human-Computer Interaction will interest those working in vision-based interfaces for intelligent human computer interaction. It also contains a comprehensive survey on existing face detection methods, which will serve as the entry point for new researchers embarking on such topics. Furthermore, this book also covers in-depth discussion on motion segmentation algorithms and applications, which will benefit more seasoned graduate students or researchers interested in motion pattern recognition.
