What's the difference between .NET Remoting and Web services? How will these changes affect the architecture and design of a distributed application? Author Tom Barnaby assumes the reader is already familiar with the fundamentals of .NET. However, a .NET overview is provided to concisely explain several of the core .NET technologies that are essential for distributed programming, including building, versioning, and deploying assemblies; garbage collection; serialization; and attribute-based programming. From the Back Cover Distributed production networks are structures which are considered able to provide the organisational agility and efficiency necessary to compete in the global market. The performance of such organisations heavily depends on the ability of those involved in the network to coordinate their activities. Two approaches are available for managing complex distributed production networks: a centralised approach, where a unique entity (the planner, for instance) has all the necessary information to make planning decisions for the entire network; or a decentralised approach where e

Description:
The production of large quantities is frequently handled by the use of assembly lines. These systems yield significant reductions of variable costs for the production of homogenous products. But due to increasing competition and differentiated demands, today it is no longer sufficient to offer only standardized products. To combine the wishes and requirements of the customers with the advantages of an efficient flow line production, different product variants are produced simultaneously on the same mixed-model assembly line. Therefore, the task of controlling such production processes is becoming more complex since an efficient production execution has to be realized in spite of the occurring oscillating work content of the different variants. Additionally, unforeseen disturbances in the production process can compromise its planned execution. To deal with these problems, this paper proposes a new approach for an adaptive real-time control of assembly lines that extends the pure sequencing problem by the integration of specific line-balancing aspects and the mapping of consequences of possible disturbance scenarios. Such a scenario could be, for instance, the loss of a worker, a material bottleneck or a machine breakdown. To guarantee an efficient continuation of the production process, the controlling instrument reacts instantly to a disturbance by adapting the current plan in a very short time, consisting of only a few cycle times, to reduce the additional costs caused by the disturbances. Leverage Automation in other applications, and add Automation interfaces to your own applications. Make the most of Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS). Embed Internet transfer and Web browser capabilities in your applications; use ActiveX documents for easy, fast intranet development; and learn distributed application debugging and maintenance techniques that really work.Written for the intermediate to advanced Visual Basic developer, Distributed COM Applications Development Using Visual Basic 6.0 ably demonstrates how VB can be used to write powerful, scalable distributed applications using the distributed Component Object Model (DCOM). The book begins by contrasting traditional client/server computing with today's n-tiered architectures (including Microsoft's three-tiered Distributed Internet Architecture [DNA] approach). A general introduction to designing objects with Visual Basic follows in which the author enlists a case study for a video rental database. This includes a presentation of the best of user interface design in VB (including working with TreeView and toolbar controls). You don't need to know much about TCP/IP to use DCOM, of course, but a section on this popular Internet protocol with the WinSock control provides some background material. A full introduction to programming databases with ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) becomes incorporated into the video rental database example. After a quick look at ActiveX controls, the book provides an overview of COM, along with the benefits and potential risks of choosing between DCOM's (often perplexing) threading models. After presenting material on object linking and embedding (OLE) Automation, the book zeroes in on creating DCOM components, data-aware VB objects with transactions and MTS, and real-world deployment issues with DCOM. These chapters provide a state-of-the-art guide to programming with Visual Basic in ways recommended by Microsoft. Armed with these robust DCOM objects, the book next turns to the Web--first with ASPs and then with VB WebClasses for generating browser-neutral Web pages on the fly. (A final chapter looks at creating Active Documents out of VB forms for use with Internet Explorer.) In all, this practically-minded text provides a useful tour for real-world thin-client computing with VB and DCOM.
