From the supplier: East Carolina University's School of Industry and Technology uses a multiprotocol NetWare LAN to connect about 100 nodes to the university's mainframes, minicomputers, and other computing resources. Only the IBM laboratory was to be networked at first, followed by the Macintosh laboratory, faculty, and staff offices using Token Ring, 10BaseT, and LocalTalk cables. Finally department labs, staff, and faculty offices in a building 500 feet away were connected using fiber-optic cable. E-mail and Internet access are available from each node on the network using Pegasus Mail. A direct IP connection from the LAN to the Internet is provided through use of Novell's NetWare Multiprotocol Router and TCP/IP support software; how the LAN was retrofitted to make direct Internet access possible is described. Aspects to consider when planning a multiprotocol LAN are examined.
